Church of St. John the Baptist in Roshchenye

The Church of St. John the Baptist in Vologda was painted in 1717 by Yaroslavl masters, presumably under the leadership of the sign painter Fyodor Ignatyev, a student of the icon painter Dmitry Plekhanov. During archaeological research in 2024, ancient burials in wooden log coffins were discovered near the church, the oldest of which is dated to 1568. In 1865, at the expense of merchant Semyon Ledentsov, a new four-tiered eclectic-style bell tower 48 meters high was erected instead of the dismantled hipped-roof belfry. The building, placed under state protection in 1960, was used as a puppet theater during the Soviet era, and the first prayer service after the return of the church to believers took place in 2006.
