Volgograd, Volga-Don Canal Lock No. 1

The Triumphal Arch of Lock No. 1 of the Volga-Don Canal is located in Volgograd and is protected by the state as an architectural and urban planning monument. It serves as the ceremonial entrance to the canal from the Volga side and is part of the building housing the management office for the lower headlock. Construction of the waterway took place from May to June 1952 according to the design of the architecture committee's workshop under the leadership of Leonid Polyakov. The arch is decorated with cast iron prows resembling the bow parts of antique ships, while its counterpart arch is situated at lock No. 13 on the Don side of the canal.
