Saint John the Baptist Church

St. John the Baptist Church in Volgograd is situated on Central Embankment at Krasnoznamenskaya St., 2. This site is linked to Tsaritsyn's history as its first fortress church. The stone structure was built in 1664 becoming the city's first stone building. After the first church burned down in 1615, a new wooden one was constructed but it too later caught fire. During World War II, the building housed an enemy bunker. The current church was restored in 1995 and serves as a convent of the Holy Resurrection Female Monastery.
