Red Square (Red Hill)

Red Square in Izhevsk, formerly known as Krasnaya Gorka, was formed on the site of a factory cemetery and the Trinity Church of the 18th century. In 1922, a monument to the fallen Bolsheviks by architect G. F. Senatov was opened here, and in 1855, a stone St. Michael's Chapel was erected on the site of a temple destroyed by fire in 1810. Later, it was replaced by the majestic Michael the Archangel Cathedral, built in 1907 and destroyed in 1937 for bricks for institutes, which the townspeople ironically called "brick stockpiling according to Ilyich's precepts." The restoration of the cathedral began in 2004, and in 1996, a church dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was laid nearby, becoming part of a single complex.
