Izhevsk Pond

The Izhevsk Pond is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in Udmurtia, created on the Izh River in 1760–1763 to power factory mechanisms. The construction of the dam, which used wood, iron, and more than 60 thousand tons of clay, required the hard manual labor of hundreds of peasants and determined the original layout of the city. The reservoir, about 12 kilometers long and covering an area of 24–26 km², is the main source of drinking and industrial water for Izhevsk, providing an annual water intake of 65–70 million cubic meters. In 1774, the dam was damaged during the Pugachev Rebellion, and in 1815 it was reconstructed according to the design of architect Semyon Dudin.
