M.Y. Lermontov Square

Lermontov Square in the historic center of Pyatigorsk, near the Tsvetnik Park, was landscaped in the 19th century specifically for the installation of a monument to the poet. The monument, created by sculptor Alexander Opekushin, for which funds were collected throughout the Russian Empire for 18 years, was solemnly unveiled in August 1889 and became the first monument to Lermontov in Russia. The original layout of the square, shaped like a lyre, included a stone grotto, an openwork cast-iron fence, and a balustrade, and over time a stone staircase appeared here. The square offers views of the Caucasus Range, Mount Mashuk, and the Spassky Cathedral, and annual poetry festivals are held at the monument.
