Initial Burial Place of Mikhail Lermontov

The site of Mikhail Lermontov's initial burial is located in the Pyatigorsk necropolis, where on July 17, 1841, the poet was seen off on his last journey by friends, comrades, and city residents. The coffin was carried by four officers from the regiments in which Lermontov served, and among those seeing him off was the Decembrist Nikolay Lorer. Although the exact location of the grave could not be reliably established, a monument was erected next to the Shangirey family crypt. The modern obelisk, which is an exact copy made of Mashuk limestone, marks the supposed site of the first burial.
