Lermontov's Grotto

Lermontov's Grotto in Pyatigorsk is one of two romantic grottos created by the Bernardazzi brothers in the Emanuelevsky Park in 1829. Originally called the Calypso Grotto, it received its current name in the 1860s due to its connection with the poet's walks. In 1870, a marble plaque with a poem by retired lieutenant Ilya Alekseev was installed inside, and in 1878 he also built a massive stone portal with gates and a decorative emblem at the entrance. In 1961, a memorial plaque appeared on the portal.
