Kraeved UVD Building ("Death Tower")

The building of regional UVD, known to locals as "Death Tower", is situated on Komsomolsky Avenue in Perm. It was constructed between 1949 and 1952 and originally housed state security bodies; later it became home to the regional interior affairs department. The architectural complex completes October Square and forms part of the characteristic mid-20th century urban ensemble. The name emerged in the latter half of the previous century and is linked to local legends, although there are no documented proofs of this. Perm writer Anatoly Subbotin used it in his work under the same title.
