Church of the Birth of John the Baptist

The Church of the Birth of John the Baptist — one of the oldest in Nizhny Novgorod, first mentioned in the 15th century. A stone building was constructed in 1683 on the site of an earlier wooden church. Here, in the autumn of 1611, Kuzma Minin addressed citizens calling for a popular militia against Polish interlopers. The temple has been repeatedly restored in the 19th century by renowned architects. Construction led to drainage problems affecting the foundation, causing basement flooding and wall collapse.
