Valery Chkalov Monument

The Valery Chkalov monument stands on the Upper Volga Embankment in Nizhny Novgorod, near Georgiyevskaya Tower of the Kremlin. Originally chosen as a site for a monument to Maxim Gorky, locals decided to immortalize the memory of the legendary aviator after his tragic death. Born nearby, Chkalov became famous for non-stop flights: in 1936 he covered over 9,000 kilometers in 56 hours, while the following year he made the first Soviet trans-polar route through Arctic regions to America.
