The Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theatre named after M. Gorky is located on the city's main pedestrian street — Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Founded in 1798, it is one of Russia's oldest provincial theaters. The theater accommodates 705 seats and is equipped with modern equipment. The theater bears the name of Maxim Gorky, a prominent writer and native of Nizhny Novgorod. Leading Russian troupes regularly perform here, and the repertoire includes Russian and world classics as well as contemporary dramaturgy.
