Chkalov Staircase

Chkalovskaya staircase, shaped like an eight, connects Minin and Pozharsky Square with the Lower Volga Embankment. Built in 1949, it has 560 steps. From its peak, there is a picturesque view of the Volga River and the confluence point. The staircase serves as the city's calling card and commemorates victory in the Battle of Stalingrad; a monument to the hero ship "Hero" from World War II is installed here. The staircase design was created by Moscow architects under the leadership of academician Lev Rudnev and architect Vladimir Munts.
