Alesha Monument

Memorial "Defenders of Soviet Arctic" also known as "Alesha", is located on a high hill called Zelyony Les in Murmansk. Its height reaches over 50 meters making it the second largest monument after Volgograd's "Mother Motherland". The project was designed by architect I.A. Pokrovsky and sculptor I.D. Brodsky. It was opened in 1974 to commemorate the victory of Soviet troops in the Arctic. Nearby the monument there are authentic anti-aircraft guns from World War II. At the base of the monument there are capsules containing soil from the Valley of Glory and seawater from the site where the ship "Tуман" sank.
