Memorial to Defenders of Soviet Arctic ("Alesha")

Memorial "Defenders of Soviet Arctic" also known as "Alesha", situated on Zelyonyi Myes Hill in Murmansk. It was opened on October 19th, 1974 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of victory of Soviet troops in Arctic. The main figure was created by sculptor Isaac Brodsky while architect Igor Pokrovsky designed it. A soldier standing 35.5 meters tall carries an automatic rifle over his shoulder and wears a poncho. The pedestal adds another 7 meters in height. The total weight of the structure is approximately 5,376 tons. The sculpture stands at a height of 173 meters above sea level.
