Vyborg Castle

Vyborg, Zamkovy Island, 1

Vyborg Castle is situated on Vyborg Island. In the 16th century there was a Governor's Residence with an unusual semi-circular projection and a towerlet with a weather vane. After administrative reforms, the castle was managed by governors. During military actions, the castle suffered little damage but burned several times. Excavations on the castle grounds revealed remains of ancient structures such as cellars and Saint Olof Tower. Some buildings were reconstructed for storage purposes. Sailor's Tower partially retains masonry from the 15th to 16th centuries up to the level of second-floor windows. Currently, the castle houses a museum and underwater archaeological expedition.
