Pyotrovskaya Square
Vyborg, Petrovskaya Square
Pyotrovskaya Square in Vyborg emerged in the 1740s under Empress Anna Ioannovna near the Anninskie fortifications. A monument to Pyotr I stands on a rock there. Previously, the square housed Mendt's house built in 1847 which served as a marketplace. In summer 2011, the square was paved with red granite. The square's history includes mass worker uprisings and changes in monuments: initially a Stalin bust, then a statue of a Soviet soldier, finally a flower vase. In the 19th century, Mendt's building hosted the city's first Russian-language school.
