Monument to Prince of Moscow Ivan III
Kaluga, Staryy Torg Sq
A monument to Prince of Moscow Ivan III in Kaluga was solemnly unveiled on November 12, 2017, on Stary Torg Square, and it is the first personal monument to a ruler in an open public space in Russia. The six-meter bronze figure is depicted in motion with a staff in his left hand, on top of which sits an eagle with outstretched wings, and the complex design of this staff has no analogues. An inscription on the pedestal describes the ruler's merits: uniting Russian lands, ending the Tatar-Mongol yoke, and establishing the coat of arms of Russia — the double-headed eagle. Before this monument was installed, a monument to Vladimir Lenin stood in its place, and architect Konstantin Fomin designed the pedestal, integrating the sculpture into the space of the square.
