Rosenthal Gate

Kaliningrad, Marshala Vasilevskogo Sq

Rosegarten Gate in Kaliningrad is situated on Marshal Vasilyevsky Square. Its name originates from the German word "rosgarten" meaning "horse garden". Built in the 18th century, it was originally used to control entry and collect taxes. Architect August Stueler increased the number of passages to seven and added architectural elements. Towers Don and Vrangel provided additional defense. The central part had four meters width; side rooms were intended for guarding. Sculptor Wilhelm Ludwig Sturmer created medallions with portraits of generals Schwarzenhorst and Gneisenau.
