Znamensky Convent

Znamensky Female Monastery is situated in Irkutsk on Angarskaya Street. It was founded near Irkutsk Fortress close to the right bank of Angara River. At the beginning of the 20th century more than 240 nuns, novices and sisters lived here. After being closed it was used as a dormitory. There existed an orphanage for 44 girls within the monastery. During Soviet times the buildings were occupied by military forces. In the 1990s large bells appeared on the bell tower. The first constructions of the monastery were wooden.
