St. Nikolay Church

St. Nikolay Church is situated in Arkhangelsk on Theatre Alley, 3. Originally it was part of Nikolo-Karelsky Male Monastery founded in the late 16th century. In 1904 its new main altar was consecrated according to architect N.A. Karetnikov's design. The church is notable for having an altar facing south rather than east to fit into the architectural ensemble of the monastery. Above the entrance stands a small shatertype bell tower. St. Nikolay is particularly venerated in the North as a protector of seafarers.
