Independence Square

In Tashkent, Mustakillik Square is the central city square where important state events and celebrations take place. It features the Memorial to Memory and Honour commemorating soldiers who died during World War II. The building of Uzbekistan's Council of Ministers after reconstruction acquired elements of traditional Uzbek architecture. Administrative buildings of the Cabinet of Ministers and Senate are situated on the square. Nearby Chorsu Fortress stands the former residence of the Governor-General of Turkestan known as "White House". The square was renamed from Lenin Square in honor of Uzbekistan's independence in 1992. After the devastating earthquake in 1966, the square underwent major reconstruction.
