Registan

Registan Square in Samarkand is an historical and cultural center of the city. It formed over several centuries - from the 15th to the 17th century. There are three famous madrasahs here: Ulugh Beg's (western side), Sher-Dor (eastern) and Tilla-Kari (northern). Today Registan serves as a venue for state celebrations and cultural events. Its name comes from Persian meaning "sandy place". During Ulugh Beg's era, Registan was also an important scientific and educational hub.
