Afrasiab (ruins)

Afrasiab - archaeological site in the northern part of Samarkand, which is an important monument of pre-Islamic and early medieval history of the region. Research has been conducted here since the mid-19th century. It is extensive ruins of ancient Samarkand covering over 200 hectares named after the mythical king Afrasiab from the Persian poem "Shahnameh". Afrasiab allows a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage and development of the city at the beginning of its existence.
