Afrasiab Citadel

Afrasiab — archaeological site in the northern part of Samarkand. Here, palaces, temples, residential areas and defensive structures dating back to the 7th century B.C. were discovered. Unique wall paintings from the 7th century depicting ambassadorial and ceremonial scenes of the Sogdian court are notable. Inclusion on UNESCO's list highlights its significance. After the Mongols, the city center shifted southward.
