Volga Arsenal Tower

Volga (Arsennaya) Tower - brick fortress built from 1658 to 1669 after a major fire in Yaroslavl. It is the sole surviving fortress tower of the Rublyov wall and one of three preserved towers from the 17th century in the city. After the 1831 fire it was transferred to military authorities and named "Arsennaya". From Volga it served as the main entrance to the fortified part of the town. In 1842 the tower was adapted for use as a municipal arsenal under imperial decree.
