Metropolitan Palaces in Yaroslavl, built in 1682 by the Rostov metropolitan Ioann Sysoevich, are one of the oldest buildings in the city and an example of ancient Russian stone civil architecture. Currently, it houses a permanent exhibition "Old Russian Art XIII-XVII Centuries", displaying the most valuable monuments of Yaroslavl art. The exhibition includes over 500 works of icon painting and has been functioning since 1977 as part of the Old Russian Art department of the Yaroslavl Fine Arts Museum.
