Kazan Cathedral

Yaroslavl, Koroslnaya Emb., at Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery

The Kazan Icon Shrine of the Mother of God is situated on Kotorosl River Embankment near Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl. Its upper part features an octagon topped with a shackle capped by a gilded dome; a bell is installed in its opening. The architectural design won first place in the 1997 competition and serves as a commemorative symbol for the popular militia that marched from Yaroslavl to Moscow in 1612. The silhouette of the shrine resembles a watchtower.
