Горицкий Успенский монастырь

The Goritsky Успенsky Monastery is located on a picturesque elevation near the southern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo in Pereslavl-Zalessky. Founded in the thirteenth century, it served for many years as an archiepiscopal residence after the establishment of the Pereslavl-Eparchy in 1744. However, following the abolition of the eparchy in 1788, the monastery fell into decline. Today, it houses one of Russia's largest provincial museums, which has been open to visitors since 1919. The collections include wooden sculpture, ancient iconography, monastic relics and items from noble households.
