Smolensk State Academic Drama Theatre named after A.S. Griboedov

Smolensk State Academic Drama Theatre named after A.S. Griboedov traces its history back to 1919 when it was organized as the State Drama and Opera Theatre. Since 2004, it has borne the name of the distinguished Russian diplomat and writer Griboedov. During World War II, the theatre ceased operations from July 1941 until November 1943. In 1989, the Small Stage opened, and in 1991, the theatre became experimental and switched to a contract-based work system. Archival documents indicate the theatrical life of the city dating back to the 18th century.
