Smolensk Fortress Wall

Smolensk Fortress Wall — the largest fortress in Russia built in the late 16th century. Construction began on December 15, 1595 under the decree of Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich supervised by master Fedor Konets and was completed in 1602. The fortress consisted of 29 mute and 9 gate towers connected by battlements. Defense of the city lasted for 20 months against Polish troops.
