Mahova Tower

Mahovaya Tower - a small four-sided tower of Smolensk Fortress, located at Smolensk, Barclay de Tolly St., 7. The structure's height is 18.5 meters, wall thickness is about 1.6 meters. The plan of the tower is square, with each side slightly over 8 meters. Inside there is an exhibition "Streltsy World". The tower is part of the State Museum "Smolensk Fortress". The name is presumably linked to commander of the garrison Ivan Mahovtsev, defender of the city in the early seventeenth century. In 1857 it was reconstructed as an archive for official offices.
