Y. A. Gagarin Monument

The monument to Y. A. Gagarin on the Cosmonauts Embankment in Saratov was officially opened on September 30, 1995, although the bronze sculpture was cast back in 1990 at the Mytishchi plant. The authorship of the composition, which depicts a cosmonaut walking along the embankment by the Volga River, belongs to Yuri Chernov, a People's Artist of the RSFSR. The installation site is connected with the Saratov period of the first cosmonaut's life and is part of a memorial route dedicated to his stay on Saratov land. Due to a lack of funds, the city could not buy the finished sculpture for three years.
