N. I. Vavilov Monument

On S. M. Kirov Square in Saratov, there is a monument to Nikolay Ivanovich Vavilov — an outstanding scientist, agronomist and botanist. A monument was unveiled here in honor of his 110th birthday anniversary in 1997. Vavilov is known for developing the theory on centers of origin of cultivated plants and writing the book "Plant Immunity to Infectious Diseases". He headed the department of private agriculture at Saratov University from 1917 to 1921 and passed away in Saratov in 1943, being buried at local Voskresenskoe cemetery.
