Varlaam Tower

Varlaamovskaya Tower is part of Pskov's Okolnogo city fortifications and defends the northern approaches to the city. It played an important role in defending Pskov during the Swedish siege in 1615 when artillery fire from the tower helped repel another attack. The tower was named after the nearby church dedicated to Varlaam Khutynsky. The fortification complex including the tower has a history dating back to the 16th century.
