Yuriev Monastery
Veliky Novgorod, Yurevskoe Hwy, 10
Yuriev Monastery is situated in Veliky Novgorod, near the source of River Volkhov from Lake Ilmen. It was founded presumably by Yaroslav the Wise around 1030 although it was first mentioned in writing only in 1119 during construction of the stone Georgiyevsky Cathedral. Over the centuries the monastery became one of the wealthiest church estates of Novgorod land yet after secularization of its possessions in the 18th century its influence significantly weakened. Today it is an active male monastery revived in 1991.
