Spaso-Preobrazhenie Cathedral on Iliny Street

The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Ilinya Street in Novgorod was built in the 14th century by citizens with their own funds. This white-stone structure stands out for its elegant facades and unique decorative embellishment. Here are preserved famous frescoes by the great master Theophanes the Greek, created during his lifetime approximately in 40 Russian churches; however, only these paintings have survived to our days. It is possible to visit the frescoes exclusively during guided tours. The church is an example of ancient Russian architecture from the 14th century and included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
