Rurik's Hill

Rurikovo Gorodische is an historical monument located 13 km from the center of Novgorod the Great, 2.5 km upstream from Novgorod Kremlin along the Volkhov River. It is said that in 862 AD Prince Rurik disembarked here according to ancient chronicles. First mentioned in annals in 1103 during construction of the Church of Annunciation by Prince Mstislav. By the end of the 11th century, the city became a residence for Novgorod princes. Archaeological research began in 1901 and between 2011-2017 restoration work was done on the ruins of the church.
