Rurik's Hill Fort

Rurikovo Gorodische — historical monument situated 13 km from the center of Novgorod and 2.5 km from Novgorod Kremlin on the banks of River Volkhov. It is believed here Prince Rurik landed in 862 AD. First mentioned in chronicles in 1103 during construction of the Church of Annunciation by Prince Mstislav. Today visitors can see archaeological finds from various eras and visit a church with an exhibition of ancient artifacts. Restoration works took place from 2011 to 2017.
