Novgorod Kremlin (Detinets)

Novgorod Kremlin, or Detinets, occupies an area of over 12 hectares and is surrounded by walls from 8 to 15 meters high and 3.6 to 6.5 meters thick. There is a Sophian Cathedral built in 1045. The fortress has nine surviving towers out of the original twelve. In 1478 after Novgorod's annexation to Moscow, the Kremlin was rebuilt with red brick under Ivan III's order. This is the only place in Russia where princes never lived. The Kremlin is included in UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage sites.
