Church of the Conception of John the Baptist in Gorodishche

The Church of the Conception of John the Baptist in Gorodishche of Kolomna, founded in 1308, is famous for its temple icon "John the Baptist, Angel of the Desert with the Life" measuring 170 by 102 cm, created in the 1390s by a master from the circle of Theophanes the Greek. The facades of the church are divided by lisenes into three spans and are topped with trefoils, while the bell tower is a two-story square base with a hipped roof over the octagonal belfry. The church's relief depicts a beast whose exact species is not determined: it could be a dragon, a griffin, a leopard, a unicorn, a basilisk, or a symbol derived from the coats of arms of the Suzdal princes.
