The monastery gained special significance during the Romanov dynasty, becoming its "cradle". Here is the famous five-domed Trinity Cathedral built in 1650-1652, as well as unique frescoes by Guriy Nikitin created in 1685. The abbey is divided into Old Town and New Town surrounded by fortress walls. Important historical events took place here, including the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov house in 1913 and the visit of Catherine II in 1767.
