Holy-Troice Ipatiev Monastery

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery is situated in Kostroma on Prosveshcheniya Street. Founded before 1432, it is now famous as the birthplace of the Romanov dynasty. Its main building is the five-domed Troitse Cathedral built between 1650-1652 decorated with frescoes by Guriy Nikitin (1685). The monastery is divided into Old Town and New Town surrounded by fortified walls. It hosted celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Romanov house (1913) and was visited by Catherine II in 1767 through the Ekateriny gates. The monastery venerates the Holy Trinity and Saint-martyr Ipatius.
