Firetower

Kostroma Fire Lookout Tower, constructed between 1824-1827 by architect Pyotr Fursov, is one of the city's symbols. Situated on Kostroma's principal square—Suzyanskaya Square—it stands approximately 37 meters tall. By the late 19th century, a fire station was appended to it. Currently, it houses a museum-reservation featuring an excursion bureau and archaeological displays. The structure is executed in the style of late classical architecture incorporating elements of ancient Greek temples. Emperor Nikolay I, during his visit to the city in 1834, highlighted the distinctiveness of this lookout tower.
