Fire Lookout Tower

Kostroma fire bell tower, situated on Susansky Square, is a symbol of the city and its main attraction. Built from 1824 to 1827 according to the project of gubernatorial architect Pyotr Fursov, it was praised by Emperor Nikolay I as surpassing St. Pyotrsburg counterparts. In mid-XIX century, side wings were added to the building for housing the fire station. Today, the tower serves as a museum with an excursion office and archaeological exhibits; its height exceeds 37 meters, while its status as cultural heritage is federally protected.
