Shakpak-Ata Underground Mosque

The underground Shakpak-Ata Mosque is located near Aktau city, on Tupkaraghan Peninsula. It is one of the oldest sacred structures in Western Kazakhstan, carved directly into limestone rock. The mosque has a unique layout with a cross-vaulted structure, stone columns and intimate rooms. Nearby there is a necropolis with gravestones and carved stones that hold historical value for the region.
