Gonio-Apsaros Fortress

Gonio-Apsaros Fortress is situated near the village of Gonio, 12 km south of Batumi. It is an ancient Roman outpost mentioned since A.D. 77, having a rectangular shape measuring 222×195 meters. The fortress is surrounded by 18 towers up to 7 meters high and strong walls about 5 meters thick. Archaeological excavations have been ongoing since 1994, uncovering valuable finds such as a gold treasure from the 2nd-3rd century AD.
