Janhau Temple (Tayo)

Lantau, Tai O, Po Chue Tam, Kat Hing Back Street

Janhau Temple is situated in Taio on Lantau Island. Built presumably in 1699 although the exact date is unknown. It is considered one of the oldest temples in the region and retains its authentic appearance through several restorations (in 1877, 1932, 1988). The temple honors mythical hero Yan Hou whose identity remains unclear. Annually there is a ritual blessing ceremony for dragon boats involving a Taoist priest. The building is recognized as a first-class historical monument and protected by the state. Inside the temple hangs ancient wooden plaques with gratitude messages from believers including a gift from officer Qianzun Left Battalion Xiangshan dated 1881.
