Kun Yam Temple
Hong Kong, Hung Hom, Station Lane
Kun Yam Temple (Guan Yin) in Hung Hom district is the largest shrine to the goddess of mercy in Kowloon district. It was built by local residents in 1873 and recognized as an historical building of Hong Kong. Every year on the 26th day of the first lunar month there is a ceremony where people borrow money from "Guan Yin's treasury". During World War II the temple became a place of refuge for locals who avoided casualties. The temple is also known for its tradition of believers repaying their debts one year after borrowing.
