Beacon Hill

Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong, Beacon Hill

Beacon-Hill is known for an old tunnel built in the early 20th century during railway construction. In 1941 it was blown up by British forces to slow down the Japanese advance. Later plans were made to store toxic waste inside but those changed. After the closure of the old tunnel in 1981 train traffic temporarily ceased until a new route was opened. Today the road east of the tunnel is private while the former defense line retains traces of World War II fortifications.
