Polotsk Fortress and Settlement

Polotsk Fortress is situated on an elevation near the Polota River and serves as a fortified center of early Polotsk. Its height is about 13.5 meters. Archaeological layers of the fortress date back to the 8th-9th centuries and relate to the formation of the Polotsk Principality. Unfortified settlements developed nearby. By the 11th century, Polotsk grew into a major socio-economic and cultural hub of the region. The site is included in the tourist route of historical and archaeological monuments of the city.
