Grodno Fortress
Гродно и окрестности
Grodno Fortress is situated around the city of Grodno and its surroundings. The fortifications were initially built to defend against field troops and enemy artillery. Main structures included earth forts designed for small infantry units and artillery. Later plans called for concrete forts and strongpoints. Earthworks constructed during the Northern War strengthened defense. The fortress was actively developed by Russian forces during this war. After Grodno's annexation by Russia in 1795, construction began on a permanent defensive system under the direction of the Prince of Warsaw.
