Surb Nshan Church in Gyumri

Surb Nshan Church in Gyumri built from 1859 to 1864 is the oldest apostolic church of the city. Elegantly constructed from polished black tufa it suffered during the 1988 earthquake but retained its central dome and bell tower. During the Soviet era the temple was used as storage facilities and workshops. The architecture of the church reflects traditional features of Gyumri churches combining black and reddish tufas.
