Marmarés Monastery

Marmachensky Monastery is situated near Gyumri, in Vagramaberd village, on the banks of river Akhuryan. The core of the complex is the main church built by Prince Vagram Pahlevuni in the X-XI centuries. The main cathedral Katogike was constructed from 988 to 1029. The monastery stands out for its harmonious structures made of red tufa and picturesque setting. Despite earthquake damage it retains a medieval appearance. It is an important pilgrimage site in Shirak region.
